College orientation programs were designed to help students ease into the transition of starting college and preparing for the semester ahead. Not only is college orientation a great way to get more information for the upcoming semester, but attendees also have the opportunity to meet other students, get familiar with the campus, join clubs and register for their first semester of classes.

Wondering how your student can prepare to put their best foot forward at orientation this summer? Check out the three tips we’ve compiled to help them get a head start on orientation prep.

1. Complete pre-orientation tasks.

Always keep an eye out for communication from your school via email or direct mail; the information inside will likely help prepare you for orientation. Most schools have a pre-orientation checklist on their websites to help incoming freshmen stay organized and on top of their documents and tasks. Checklist items may vary from tasks like creating an official school email account, ensuring immunizations are up to date, applying for on-campus housing, completing roommate surveys and taking placement tests.

2. Create a list of questions.

Prepare a list of questions to ask before orientation. A few examples could include: Can I tour the dorm I’ll be living in? Where is student parking and is a parking permit required? What are the latest pandemic and safety protocols? How does the meal plan work? Where are the best places to eat on campus? This is the best time to interact with staff, faculty and upperclassmen who are eager to help and answer any burning questions about what to expect at college.

3. Apply for GEAR UP’s college reimbursement program!

The GEAR UP team is committed to helping our students succeed in college. Oklahoma GEAR UP will reimburse the cost of college orientation, as well as college bridge programs, for students who graduate from one of the 10 designated GEAR UP school districts.
