Educator Resources

GEAR UP provides training and coaching to educators to strengthen their leadership skills. Our coordinators train educators on effective classroom strategies, research-based student intervention programs and engaging parents – all with the aim of helping students matriculate to and succeed in college. We provide additional help for first-year and alternatively-certified teachers. In addition, we help form professional learning communities to help teachers and faculty address student achievement and common assessments.

Collaboration and Leadership Opportunities

Oklahoma GEAR UP provides collaboration and leadership opportunities for school administrators, faculty and staff; and works with them to implement and enhance Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to address student achievement. GEAR UP grant funding allows educators to attend national PLC trainings, as well as receive resources to help all GEAR UP students learn at higher levels.

GEAR UP education coordinators participate in weekly teacher meetings to offer ongoing support for PLC classroom strategies. GEAR UP staff helps teachers recognize the key to improved learning for students is on-going, job-embedded learning for the adults who serve those students.

The three big ideas of a PLC call upon educators to:

Focus on learning.

Build a collaborative culture.

Create a results orientation.

Student Connect

Student Connect is a mentoring program that helps to promote students’ active participation in school and learning and help them feel connected to school. Student Connect mentors meet individually with students to discuss the importance of attendance, academic progress, behavior and the importance of an education.

College App Campaign

For many students, particularly those who do not have an immediate family member who attended college, applying to college can be overwhelming. Having someone to encourage and help them navigate the college application process can open the door for students to pursue a postsecondary education. By implementing a college app campaign, high schools can ensure that all seniors have the opportunity to receive hands-on assistance as they take the first big step toward continuing their education following high school.

Oklahoma GEAR UP is pleased to provide support through resource materials, training opportunities and on-site assistance.
