GEAR UP Helps Communities by Working With Schools to Create College-Going Students

Oklahoma GEAR UP is currently in its fifth seven-year commitment of partnering with school districts to help increase the number of college-going students throughout the state. GEAR UP V, which began in October 2024, serves approximately 16,000 middle school and high school students yearly across Oklahoma.

Here's How We Help

Staff

Train educators as they adopt classroom strategies proven to help students learn more effectively

Strengthen educators' leadership

Implement research-based student intervention programs

Offer instructional coaching from GEAR UP education coordinators to first-year and alternatively certified teachers

Students

Provide tutoring, mentoring, career and college exploration, and preparation programs.

Develop specific knowledge and skills needed for college searches, college match, and college application and enrollment processes

Introduce students to campus life through guided college tours

Encourage students to attend college orientation programs and provide coaching through students' freshman year of college

Offer one-on-one guidance from GEAR UP Site Directors

Community

Assist parents and students with financial aid information, including Oklahoma's Promise enrollment and FAFSA completion

Help schools develop relationships with business leaders and community partners who support a college-going culture

Encourage parent engagement in college preparation events and activities
