In just a few short weeks, high school seniors will be walking across that graduation stage, receiving their diploma, and turning the tassel on their cap. For students planning on attending college in the fall, there may be questions on how to achieve success in the next chapter. We’re here to help. Read on for more information about GEAR UP resources and tips that can help students stay on track.

According to the Education Data Initiative, the average college dropout rate is 40%, and 30% of that number comes from college freshmen who drop out before their sophomore year. GEAR UP wants to help students be a part of the 60% who stick with their higher education by supporting them through the transition from high school to college.

Here are a few of our top tips:

1. Reach out to a College Coach.

We have College Coaches stationed at universities across Oklahoma who are entirely focused on helping GEAR UP students succeed in their transition to college. 2. Connect with your college advisor.

Each student is assigned an advisor who can help them register for classes and start thinking about choosing a major. These advisors are experts when it comes to their university’s course offerings, prerequisites and graduation requirements. This is an excellent resource to lean on for advice.

3. Attend office hours.

Though it may be intimidating at first to reach out to professors in college, attending office hours frequently can help increase comfortability and confidence. If course material becomes confusing or challenges emerge, don’t hesitate to attend office hours.

4. Use a planner.

College professors expect a lot from their students in terms of time management and organization, which can be a challenging adjustment for freshmen. Avoid turning in assignments late or forgetting to study for a quiz by purchasing a planner at the beginning of the semester.

5. Be flexible.

Students may start college with a firm idea of what they want to study, or they may have no clue. College is a time to learn about many different disciplines and discover what piques a student’s interests. Take advantage of the opportunity to explore all the options a university has to offer. GEAR UP’s College Coach can help discuss options to chart a path.

College is an amazing time for students and GEAR UP is here to help you succeed.
